Talents to use Kathrin Bestler    9/2/2008

What makes you special? What is it that the Lord has put into you that is unique?

There are always things that only you can do. The Lord has made you special and has given you gifts and abilities that are particular to you. Maybe you already know about these things or maybe you do not know yet but the fact is, you have these gems inside of you.

Maybe you have the ability to do something physical. You can carry heavy weights and you find out soon that every time somebody is moving house you are the first one they call. Is that a good thing? Sure it is, because you help others and they rely on you. You make the lives of many easier.

Maybe when you talk to people they just open up. Not because you can talk well, but because you listen to them. Finally they find somebody who does not always talk about themselves but has a heart to know what is going on in their lives. What a relief for many!

Maybe you have the ability to play an instrument, to write or to paint or do any other artistic thing. You have started to sing in the shower and found out that it actually sounds good!

Or maybe you can do sports well. You can run like a cheetah, jump like a rabbit or whatever it is. This also is an ability that the Lord has given you. There are many other things that you can do and there are also gifts of the spirit that are mentioned in the bible in 1. Corinthians. All of these things are gifts and abilities.

Last week the Lord was talking to me about these things that are also called talents in the bible. He said to me: “There are things that only YOU can do. Talents that I have given you that are special and only appearing in your life in that way. Go and use those talents again. If you do not use them, then something is missing in my body. Take what I have given you and use them. Multiply them so that you can also grow in them. Give them out to the people so that my Kingdom can grow.”

The Lord also reminded me of the scriptures that talks about the talents. It is quite a clear and challenging message! It says in Matthew 25:14-29

For the Kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants and handed to them his goods. And to one he gave five talents, to another two and to another one; to every man according to his own ability; and immediately took his journey.

Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with them and made another five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained another two. But he that had received one went and dug in the earth and hid his lord’s money.

After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought another five talents saying: Lord, you handed me five talents: look, I have gained besides them five talents more. His lord said to him: Well done, you good and faithful servant: you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter into the joy of your lord.

He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, you handed to me two talents: look, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter into the joy of your lord.

Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not strewn: And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth: look, here you have what is yours.

His lord answered and said to him, You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I have not strewn: You ought therefore to have put my money to the lenders, and then at my coming I would have received my own with interest. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

For to every one that has will be given, and he will have abundance: but from him that does not have will be taken away even that which he has.

Does it matter how many talents you have been given? No, it doesn’t. But you can take what you have and go out and use it. Invest it into people and give it out to them. And you will receive even more!

This bible passage has challenged me a lot lately and hopefully it will talk to you too!
